Francis Grose (1731-1791) was an army officer who served in the cavalry, infantry, and militia. A keen amateur military historian, he was able to move and observe among the rank and file of the army and to gain access to the curio cabinets of the gentry. He also wrote two dictionaries of slang and cant.
