A prominent street rail-way official, who has been connected with street railway work for 574 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. [Vol. XXVI. No. 14. many years, made the remark in the hearing of the writer thatthere was not a better piece of track in the United States. As this work proved thoroughly successful, the company de-cided to weld about iooo joints this summer. Of these, 400 are on9-in. 107-lb. grooved rail which has been down about four years, 150on 7-in. 70-lb. T-rail which has been down about six years, 100 on6-in. 60-lb. T-rail which has been down about five years, and 350on new 7-in. 90-lb. grooved rail. As nearly all of the rails to bewelded are about 60 ft. in length, this will represent about 5 milesof track, all of which is in paved streets. The work on the 9-in. rail has already been completed. Owingto the heavy traffic over some of the lines, about 200 joints had tobe made between the hours of 12 and 5 in the morning,. GRINDER FOR SMOOTHING JOINT three men being able to weld from twelve to fourteen joints in thislength of time. Where the time between cars was 10 minutes orover the work was done in the daytime, as the joints can easily bemade while the cars are running without interfering with the total number of joints made, three (or less than 1 per cent)were imperfect, and had to be repoured. No breaks have yet oc-curred. The cost of joints on 9-in. rail made this year has been$, divided as follows: Thermit $ Labor ■ 50 Molds 20 Crucibles, per joint 25 Incidentals 05 Total $ Data on the other sections of rails are not yet available, as thework is not yet completed, but as the charges for labor, molds, etc.,remain practically constant, irrespective of the section of rail, it
