It is desira])le, when practicable, that therepair shops for cars and locomotives should becontiguous. The advantages of combining thetwo plants are too valuable to be overlookedand far outweigh any disadvantages that suchunion engenders. In what follows it is assumedthe buildings comprising the two kinds of workare located in convenient, neighborly relation. The car repair shops may be said, briefly, tocomprise a planing mill, erecting shop for passen-ger cars, erecting shop for freight cars, passengercar paint shop, freight car paint shop, blacksmithand forge shop.* The storehouse is general. * If the road is a small one, these buildings will be consoli-dated to conform to actual needs. Indeed, this adaptability ofthe plant to what is required by local conditions will occur inevery branch of the service. My description in this chaptermay be said to apply to roads of maximum size in 1897. 272 RAIL WA y mfj>r/o/*. sro/f£ House, c^^oe^r. It should alsobe convenient to the power house, as the planing mill makes large demandsin this respect. It is thought the passen-P^ ger car erecting shop, the^ freight car erecting shop, and the paint shops may beadvantageously located parallel to each other, yet separated sufficiently for a transfer table tobe placed between them. The dimensions of thetransfer tables must be sufficient to hold carsof the maximum length.
