In 1796 John Adams, the candidate of the Federalistparty, was chosen President over Thomas Jefferson, whowas the candidate of the Republicans, or , who was the son of a farmer, was born in Brain-tree, ISIass., in 1735. He graduated at Harvard, taughtschool for two years, and began the practice of law whenhe was twenty-three years of age. He took an activepart in the Stamp-Act agitations from 1765 onward. Heremoved to Boston in 1768, and soon became a leading TROUBLES WITH EXGLAND AXD lawyer and a chief of the Revolu-tionary party. Adams was one ofthe foremost men in the Congressof 1774 and 1775, and was one ofthe leading advocates of the Decla-ration of Independence. He wasone of the commissioners to nego-tiate the treaty of peace with Eng-land, and was minister at Londonfor three years. Adams was Vice-President during the whole of Wash-ingtons presidency. He was anable and courageous man, honest and true to his con-victions, but irritable and somewhat quarrelsome. Hispeculiarities had something to do with his unpopularityand his defeat when he ran for the presidency a secondtime. He died on the 4th of July, 1826, exactly fiftyyears after the Declaration of Independence, and on thesame day with his ancient rival, Jefferson.
