The roads and railroads, vehicles, and modes of travelling, of ancient and modern countries; with accounts of bridges, tunnels, and canals, in various parts of the world .. . points c and d. called the dead points, at which, whenthe crank has arrived, it is carried past them simply byits momentum, for the rod has as much tendency to pullin one way as the other. When two cranks, therefore, areplaced on the same axle, they are set at right angles toeach other, so that the freak or dead points of the one maycorrespond with the strongest points of the other. Thereis. of course, a difference of half a stroke between the twoengines, to accommodate them to this arrangement; oneengine is always half a stroke later than the other: sothat there is no danger of both the cranks arriving atonce at the dead points. If this were to happen, themotion would not only be uneven, but the cranks wouldprobably be broken off
