Place de la République, Paris, France. 16th May, 2016. Several thousand supporters of the French youth protest movement Nuit Debout took part in a global day of demonstrations (#GLOBALDEBOUT) centred in Paris. Nuit debout, which loosely means “rise up at night”, began on 31st March with a night-time sit-in in Paris after the latest street demonstrations by students and unions critical of President François Hollande’s proposed changes to labour laws. Similar demonstrations were staged in over 190 European cities, including London and Berlin, together with the Place de la République, which recently witnessed scenes of violent clashes between police and protesters. Today's protest however ended after midnight with the police clearing the Place de la République with a handful of demonstrators being pepper sprayed, ushered into Metro entrances and forced to leave the area.
