Then they would be pleased to again extend the G. S. A. an invitation to meet at Pitts- burgh. Your secretary took the matter up with President William W. Vert, who made arrangements with the American Institute for the 1918 meeting and exhi- bition. A second letter to the firms and individuals offering the special prizes brought a responsive sanction for all the prizes to be transferred to the pres- ent exhibition. Your secretary appre- ciates on behalf of the C. S. A. the kind- ness of those whose generosity makes the list of special prizes possible. Membership Campaign. As instructed at the last annual meet- ing, your secretary had 20,000 applica- tion-for-membership forms printed and sent to the leading chrysanthemum growers for insertion in their 1918 cata- logues. So far the gain in new mem- bers has scarcely paid for the outlay. The general outlook for the chrysan- themum is satisfactory. Not for many years has the demand for cut blooms been so heavy as this season. The pom- pons and single varieties are also being called for in larger quantities. The routine work of the secretary's office, consisting of sending out state- ments to the members, recording the varieties disseminated, getting out the report of the sixteenth annual meeting and the solicitation of special premi- ums, was attended to in due season. Your secretary wishes to acknowledge the kindness of Elmer D. Smith in fur- nishing him with a complete list of va- rieties disseminated in 1917, which was a great help in getting up the annual report. The trade papers generously pub- lished all notices sent to them from time to time during the year, for which we owe to them a vote of thanks. CHRYSANTHEMUM SOCIETY, Work of the Committees. The examining committees of the C. S. A. have submitted reports on new va- rieties as follows: At Boston, Qptober
