The Emscher has been completely free of sewage since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater. Parks and gardens in the Ruhr region. Nordsternpark is a landscaped park on the site of the former Nordstern colliery in Gelsenkirchen.
