Leaves broadly ovate to oval, ii'-4' long, i'-3i' wide, acute at the apex, broadly cuneate to truncate at the base, serrate or doubly serrate with broad shallow acuminate lobes, tomentose, becoming scabrous above, subcoriaceous; corymbs many-flowered, tomentose; flowers about 10" broad; stamens about 10; anthers yellow; styles and nutlets 4 or 5; fruit globose or sub- globose, 8"-io" thick, bright crimson, slightly pubes- cent; calyx-lobes but slightly swollen, spreading; flesh thick, juicy and edible. Eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut. August. May ; fruit ripe.
