To ascertain what progress isbeing made in this desirable direction, statistical sheets shouldbe kept up-to-date in the estate office as well as by the secre-taries at home. These sheets should show the weekly output MACHINERY AND MANUFACTURE 197 of each grade of rubber and should be constantly referredto. The great effort should be to have as small a proportionas possible of what might have been first-grade rubber dis-qualified on account of discolouring or spots. This is where thegreatest leakage is usually perceptible. To have a really highgrade of first-latex rubber, discoloured sheets should be keptapart, or the standard of the whole lot will be degraded. Thepercentage of first-latex rubber has been claimed to be as high as. Out of fifteen cases there may be fivewhich fetch—for example—4s. 4|d. per lb., five which realize4s. 3d., and the remaining five 4s. i|d. If all the cases hadobtained the top price the total sum secured by the companywould have been much increased. Uniformity in appearanceand in quality is very essential. It is really then with thefirst-latex rubber that the great difficulties are experienced in 198 THE RUBBER TREE BOOK endeavouring to secure absolute regularity without sacrificinga considerable proportion by reducing it a grade. This is amatter which is well worthy of care and attention from estatemanagers. When well cleansed
