It is easily damaged by frost and should not be planted until danger of frost is past in the spring. It fits in well as a summer crop follow- ing spring vegetables. This vegetable is in- creasing rapidly in importance both for fresh market and for processing. It grows well on a wide range of soil types, but produces best on soils of medium fertility with pH of On soils of high fertility levels excessive vine growth, with sparse flower and pod develop- ment results.
