James Glaisher (1809-1903), British meteorologist and balloonist. Glaisher was born in London, and for many years was an assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatories. His research work was in meteorology, especially the measurement of humidity. In the 1860s he undertook many research ascents by balloon to take readings of atmospheric conditions such as temperature and humidity. On September 5th 1862 he and his co-pilot broke the world altitude record, but both men passed about at around 8, 800 metres - twice the altitude at which oxygen supplies are mandatory today. Both men survived.
