In 1995 Ante Gotovina had led Croatian forces to recapture the breakaway region of Krajina that led to many of his compatriots regarding him as a hero. Indicted for war crimes in 2001 he denied responsibility. Arrested in Spain in 2005. Trial 2011. Croatia's EU accession unblocked.
