One of the chieffeatures is the formation, in the centre of the building, of acourtyard, roofed with glass. This answers two purposes—a loading way and a conductor of light. Access is obtainedboth from Broad Quay and from Princes Street byentrances large enough to take three lorries abreast. Atthe time the site was purchased this courtyard formed adark, narrow passage between tlie two blocks of property,and went by the name of Aldersky Lane A closing order. Aldekskv 572 INDUSTRIAL CO-OPERATION IN BRISTOL. was obtained from the Council, and thus disappeared oneof the dirty bits of old Bristol, giving place to utility,sweetness, and light. The principal entrance is surmounted by sculpturedfigures symbolic of two local industries, ^Mining andAgriculture. Internally the construction of the building is fire-resisting, the columns being of iron, and the floors of steelgirders, filled in with cement concrete, which is coveredwith pine flooring; but, to provide against the possibilityof a serious fire, the building is fitted throughout withan installation of automatic fire sprinklers of the Grinnellpattern. In addition thereto, tanks, each containing sixbuckets of water, are provided on each floor. An amateurfire brigade of selected employes is trained and practisedevery week, so as to be available in case of emergencies. No expense has
