Carved stone guards, one about to hurl a rock, above Gothic entrance to Old Town Hall or Altes Rathaus in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. The guards were intended to symbolise Regensburg’s status as a free and independent imperial city.
Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany: Gothic entrance to the Old Town Hall or Altes Rathaus. The 1300s - 1400s Town Hall includes the Imperial Diet Hall or Reichssaal, built c. 1360 and from 1663 to 1806 meeting place for the Perpetual Imperial Diet. The Diet was the legislature of the German empire or Holy Roman Empire from the 1100s to 1806. Its members were originally princes, including bishops of princely status, but counts and barons were included later. The Diet of Regensburg of 1663 prolonged itself indefinitely into a permanent session and was thereafter called the Regensburg Diet or Everlasting Diet. The Permanent Imperial Diet was one of the most important political institutions in the Holy Roman Empire. For almost 150 years representatives from all over the Empire met permanently in the Old Town Hall in Regensburg. In the Middle Ages, Regensburg was an important economic centre. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
