The tests proved that thesemachines can be relied upon under all conditionsof weather, and that they can not be harmed by is of a new design, which has been shown to giveexcellent results in this kind of work. Thesebrushes, instead of cutting the surface of thecommutator, as brushes of copper and othermaterials have been proved to do, acts as a lubri-cant, keeping the commutator smooth, and, at thesame time, giving very good electrical connec-tion. The Sprague method of flexibly suspendingthe motors and of controling the speed of themotor without the use of any wasteful resistances,is also adopted with these motors. In designing this motor great care has beentaken with regard to its strength and durability, and in reducing its weight to a minimum. Forthis purpose, and with this object in view, castiron has been dispensed with in the cores and yoke. Sprague Improved Electric Railway Motor. Only one intermediate shaft is used betweenthe armature pinion and the main gear, and theentire reduction is about 12 to i. Thegears, and all parts of the motor are madevery strong and durable, as can be seen inthe case of the gears in the engraving, wherethe general appearance of durability and strengthis decidedly marked. The main gears are of the split gear pattern,so that, in case of necessity, they can be easilyremoved from the shaft, without dismountingthe machine. The pinion and all the bear-ings are also constructed so that they can beeasily removed, if necessary, and all the bear-ings are made completely dust-proof and verytlurabJe, moisture or by water splashing upon them fromthe road bed. Another important improvement which hasbeen adopted in this machine is that the fieldmagnet coils are completely incased in metalliccovers, which fully protect the wire from all out-side damage. These casings are hermeti
