A poem by Irish poet and journalist Patrick MacGill (1889-1963) of the London Irish Rifles at the Island of Ireland Peace Park in Messines, Belgium

This photo : Close-up of a stone tablet with a poem by Patrick MacGill, London Irish Rifles "I wish the sea were not so wide that parts me from my love, I wish that things men do below were known to God above. I wish that I were back again in the Glens of Donegal; they’ll call me coward if I return, but a hero if I fall". The Island of Ireland Peace Park and its surrounding park (Irish: Pairc Siochana d'Oilean na hEireann), also called the Irish Peace Park or Irish Peace Tower in Messines, near Ypres in Flanders, Belgium, is a war memorial to the soldiers of the island of Ireland who died, were wounded or are missing from World War I, during Ireland's involvement in the conflict. The tower memorial is close to the site of the June 1917 battle of Messines Ridge, during which the 16th (Irish) Division fought alongside the 36th (Ulster) Division.
