Academy of Our Lady of Anoels.— A con-vent of the Missionary Sisters of the Order ofSt. Francis, was established in Peekskill, on the hillsoutheast of the railroad depot, iu the early part of1X69, and the Academy of Our Lady of Angels wasopened by them for the instruction of young ladiesin April of the same year. There are about seventy-five Sisters of this order in the United States, ofwhom about forty are stationed in Peekskill. In1884 the number of scholars attending the academywas about thirty. A Home for poor children was established in number of children intrusted to the care of theSisters became so great that in 1882 a four-story brick. CORTLANDT. 401 building, forty by ninety feet, was erected for theiraccommodation. The children in the Home in 1884numbered over four hundred. The buildings aresituated in a tract of about fourteen acres. Theproperty is valued at one hundred thousand dollars. MANUFACTORIES OF PEEKSKILL. The manufacture and working of iron has fromearly days been the chief industry of Peekskill, andmore than any other thing has caused the growth andimportance of the place. Chief among the articlesof manufacture produced are stoves, furnaces andranges. In 1884 eight stove-works were in operationin the village, employing over seven hundred men,and there were in addition the machine-shop of An-derson Brothers, the works of the old Peekskill Man-ufacturing Co., an emory manufactory, two shirt-fac-tories and a manufactory of lamp fixtures.
