The lower end of the humerus is one of the bones most frequently involved in injuries and disease, but the other bones entering into the joint should also be remembered in relation to the times at which their epiphyses join the diaphyses. The internal epicondyle is not a part of the lower epiphysis of the humerus, but is formed from a separate centre of ossification. In an X-ray picture it is seen as a small, oval mass, higher up on the inner side of the humerus, and intimately connected with the internal condyle. The epiphysis of the head of the radius is seen as a small disc, just above the upper end of the bone. In a lateral view of the joint at about five years the lower epiphysis of the humerus appears to be semilunar in shape, fitting closely to the lower end of the shaft.
