Umbilical hernia. Artwork of a congenital umbilical hernia protruding through a baby's abdomen. A cut-away view of the hernia is at top. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue through a structure or muscle that normally contains it. In this case part of the intestine is protruding through the navel. It is a congenital (present from birth) defect. Umbilical hernias are often self-correcting, but in some cases surgical repair of the hole may be required.
