Thev sittogether on a rock, in the centre ot the picture ; the shep-herd, seated somewhat higher, bends towards his companion to showher the nest, which he holds in both hands ; she lays her arm onhis knee, and throws her head back to look at it. Roses lie on therock at her side, and near him is a brown-and-white dog. Behindon the right is a rocky knoll overhanging a little rivulet, and a rich-toned blue and yellow sky fills the space between this and a treeon the other side. The light is concentrated on the girl and thefurther part of the bank ; the rest is in shadow or half-tone. Canvas. lO in. x 8 in. ( x ). The centre portion of this picture, which was presented to the NationalGallery of Scotland by Mrs. Williams in 1866, was etched (in reverse) withdecorative supporters and border by Francois Boucher (1703-1770) as LeD^nicheur de Moineaux for Juliennes Recueil.
