Japan: 'Camels and Musicians'. Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyasu (1794-1832), 1824. The camels and musicians are redolent of the Tang Dynasty and the Silk Road, especially Sogdian or Central Asian entertainers at the Tang Court. Utagawa Kuniyasu, born Yasugoro and also known as Ipposai and Nishikawa Yasunobu, was a relatively popular Japanese artist from the Utagawa school. He was taught by Utagawa Toyokuni, and illustrated around a hundred books throughout his career. He also designed hundreds of stand-alone prints of actors (yakusha-e) and beauties (bijing-ga).
