Therefore the special committeekept which boat they had selected a dark secretuntil the morning of the day fixed for the firstinternational race, November 8. THE START FOR THE CUP.(By permission .of Charles Scribners Sons.) the flag officers of the club, were chosen tosail in trial races for the purpose of selectinga winner. The yachts started over the New-York Yacht Club course in the first of thetrial races on October IB. Before getting throughthe Narrows a strong puff of wind came overthe Staten Island hills, and the topmasts ofthe Gracie and Pocahontas went by the race was won by the Mischief. On October19 the second trial race was sai,led, only theGracie, Pocahontas and Mischief starting. TheGracie won, beating the Mischief by threeminutes and nineteen seconds. The Pocahontasproved that she was a flat failure, and wasfar. behind at the finish. The third -ferial race was sailed over a courseoutside the Hook on October 20. Mischief, Gracieand Pocahontas were the competitors. ThePocahontas was so badly disabled that she wastowed back to a sheltering basin and laid up. canals,
