Prinsen Gracht Amsterdam Holland

Holland is a European country in the western part of the Netherlands, lies on the North Sea, and has numerous rivers, lakes and an extensive inland canal and waterway system. The country is bordered on the East by the Ijsselmeer and four different provinces of the Netherlands. Holland, today, consists of the Dutch provinces of North and South Holland its capital is the city of Amsterdam and the primary spoken language is Dutch. Holland is protected by the North Sea by a long line of coastal dunes; most of the land area behind the dunes lies well below sea level. Continuous drainage is necessary to keep Holland from flooding and windmills were used for the task, the landscape was (and in places still is) dotted with windmills which have become a symbol of the country. Today the Zuiderzee Works, the dam is called the Afsluitdijk which was built in 1932-1933 and The Delta Works, built in 1950-1997 and located in South West Netherlands, are man made systems of dams and storm surge barriers which control Holland’s water levels.
