the famous marian colum from vienna located in the first district am hof near st stephens cathedral
the marian column was built at the end of the thirty year war. it is located in the middle of the famous place "am hof" in the first district of vienna which is one of viennas historical most important places. the viennese marian column was built after the model of munichs marian column. the bronze sculptures were built by balthasar herold and the column was built by carlo martino carlone and carlo canevale. there are four bronze sculptures around the column. theese show weaponed putti which are armed with a shield and a sword. one of them fights against a dragon which means he fights against hunger. another one fights against a lion which means he fights against the war. another one fights against a snake which means he fights againts disbelief. the last one fights against a basilisk which means he fights against the pest.
