Insect predation research. Entomologist viewing results of an ELISA test. The blue colour indicates the presence of whitefly remains in the stomach of predator insects. The ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) test checks for the presence of proteins such as antibodies and antigens. Whiteflies (family Aleyrodidae) are a major pest of agricultural crops. The use of predator insects to control them is an example of biological pest control. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
