His third nights camp fire was built against the face of a big rock. He was prodigal with fuel, and the heat of the roaring fire cracked the rock and revealed gold. The Denver clerk discovered an outcropping vein that led into the wonderful treasure vaults of Cripple Creek. That was in 1890.
