Firebrick starfish. Firebrick starfish, Asterodiscides truncatus, on an boulder. Star fish are echinoderms which usually, though not always, have five arms. They move by means of numerous short tubular feet, which terminate in suction discs. These are situated along the underside of the arms. The mouth is also located on the undersurface. Starfish feed on plants, molluscs, micro-organisms or decaying matter, depending on the species. Ciliary processes on the undersurface draw particles into the mouth. Some species can evert their stomachs through their mouth to the outside in order to digest their prey. Photographed on the South West Rocks, Australia.
