FRANCIS WILLEY KELSEY was bornat Ogden, Monroe County, New York, May 23,185 8, son of Henry and Olive Cone (Trowbridge)Kelsey. After a preliminary training in the publicschools he entered the University of Rochester, andwas graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1880. The degreeof Master of Arts followed in 1S83. He began hisacademic career as instructor in Lake Forest Uni-versity. In 1882 he was made Professor of Latinin that institution, where he continued till 18S3, 1884-1885, and at various other timesfor longer or shorter periods, he pursued studies inEurope. In 1889 he was appointed Professor ofLatin in the University of Michigan, and on thedeath of Professor Frieze, in December of that year,he succeeded to the chair of the Latin Language andLiterature, which position he still holds.
