A high degree ofaccuracy in the work produced by this machine is insuredby the great care exercised in its manufacture and benefit of the high speed tool steels, now in wide use,may be derived, such service being provided for by the ratio September, 1904. RAILWAY MASTER MECHANIC 371. ins. top wearing surfaces, insuring permanent alignment ofthe table. The cross traverse is 21 ins. and the screw hasgraduated collar. Vertical adjustment is effected by meansof bevel gears that are protected from chips and dirt, andprovided with ball bearings, which reduce friction to theminimum. The improved telescopic screw does away withcutting a hole in the floor. The rocker arm is connected to the ram by means of alink, properly set, giving a straight pull and an even cuttingspeed, with a very quick return and no lost motion. Fig. 3shows tbis construction, and also the very superior adjust-ment to compensate for wear of crank shoe. C^^0 Fig. 1—Queen City Sixteen-Inch Shaper. of back gearing of 20 to 1. This gearing is shown in Fig. 2. The column is of large proportions. It is very heavy andreinforced at proper points to resist working strain. Thebearing for the ram is SO^-inch by 10-inch, and attention isdirected to the manner in which the slides
