He promised that the board and other oflicials of the Depart- ment of Agriculture will do everything possible to determine where and how such stock can be grown and that means will be provided for bringing in any necessary propagating material. He said the quarantine had been promul- gated a few months earlier than orig- inally planned, because conditions grow- ing out of the war made it seem oppor- tune, but that it had not been hastily conceived and would not soon be changed—the trade could go ahead with investments to grow the quarantined articles without fear that the board's backbone would give way under pres- sure. "Go ahead," he said, "and de- velop the business on a bigger, broader, better basis than ; Offering to answer questions anyone might wish to ask. Dr. Marlatt sat down amid applause so scattering as to lead to the belief that no great new wave of enthusiasm for the quarantine had been aroused by the speaker's carefully chosen words.
