Damascus steel. Knife and insets showing the structure of modern Damascus steel. The blade of the knife was produced using alternating layers of light and dark steel. These layers are revealed when the blade is ground at an angle on both sides. The three insets (across top) show close-ups of the layers, with the central inset showing a view looking down on the top edge of the knife. The original Damascus steel is a lost process where thin sheets of steel were hammered and folded many times to create hardened steel blades. This example has a burl wood handle. It is 18 centimetres long, with a blade length of centimetres and a weight of 80 grams.
