C, rocker arm, shaft, andbell-crank connection by link tothe eccentric and to low-pressurevalve rod. (At Edison ElectricStation, New York City.) 208. WALSCHAERTS VALVE GEAR as appHed to a com-pound locomotive. The crank-pin arm operates the motion of the. slotted link. The valve-rod block and rod is balanced by a weight onthe rock-shaft arm, and operated by a lever connected to the thirdarm. Valve lead is made by the crosshead arm link and lever con-nected to the valve rod and link-block rod. ItaUan railway. STEA^r rOWER APPLTANXES. 95 209. REVERSING GEAR. The eccentric is provided with acurved rack near its periphery which meshes with a small pinion. The pinion is secured to the end of ashaft provided with a groove dis-posed spirally for a portion of itslength. The shaft is journaled intwo collars or flanges keyed tothe main shaft so that the smallshaft lies parallel to the engineshaft. A third collar slidablymounted on the engine shaft isprevented from turning by asuitable key, this collar carrying the strap to which the reversing leveris connected. A pin in the latter collar engages the groove in thesmaller shaft and when this collar is shifted sidewise the pin causes thesmaller shaft to revolve, which turns the eccentric around on
