View SE of Merlin's Well (Wishing Well) on Alderley Edge wooded, red sandstone escarpment, Cheshire. Water drops from the outcrop, which bears the face of the wizard Merlin, into a rectangular stone basin. An inscription reads: "Drink of this and take thy fill for the water falls by the Wizard's will." The area is designated an SSSI for its biological & geological interest, and rich in myths & legends, used most notably by writer Alan Garner in his The Weirdstone of Brisingamen series of novels. King Arthur and his knights are said to lie sleeping in a magic cave adjacent to the well, and once bought a white horse from a local farmer. A National Trust property.
