The Empire shaft (the latest sunk) was filledwith water to within 15 feet of the collar at the time, and escapinggases were bubbling up through the water. The gases escaping from the waters are carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, sulpliurdioxide, and marsh gas. The waters contain cliiefly carbonates, borates, and chloridesof sodium, potassium and ammonium ; but alkaline sulphides are also As to the mode of occurrence of cinnabar
