In accord-ance with this, the kings acting in concert first made Hugo, the sonof Waldrada, incapable of doing harm, and restored order in then marched against Boso, and besieged his ca[)ital, there the league which had scarce been made was broken. This surprising change ofpolicy Avas due to the inducements offered to Charles on the part ofPope John VIIL, which led the king to sacrifice the welfare of hiswhole family and realm to a personal advantage which could beattained only for the moment. On September 22, 880, while the war against Boso was goingon, Carloman (Fig. 38), the eldest of the German Carolingians, suc-cumbed to a long illness.
