One of the coronary arteries (on the surface of the heart) has become blocked, preventing oxygenated blood reaching an area of the heart muscle. This has caused an infarct (grey area, bottom) where heart tissue has died. In severe cases this can be fatal. The blockage, usually a build up of fatty deposits, can be bypassed by an operation to restore the blood supply.
