As we have no evidence that the density changed, there must have been high recruitment to offset the mortality. The larger mean size of the shells suggests differential mortality of larger aba- lones but aquarium observations indicate that smaller abalone shells are more likely to be ground into unrecognizable fragments (Tegner and Butler unpub- lished data).
