This popular science book, by French author Emile Desbeaux, covered topics in physics such as sound energy, electrical energy, light energy and heat energy, as well as recent inventions in these areas. These included the phonograph, the telephone, the telegraph, and topics such as electricity, optics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics. This allegorical frontispiece illustration shows a muse-like female figure standing on the North Pole of an Earth globe, wrapped in telegraph cables, crowned in lightning, and using a magnifying glass to shine light and heat on a European city.
