Placoparia sedgewickii, Ordovician trilobite fossil. Trilobites were arthropods that fed as they crawled on the seabed. They lived between 500 and 300 million years ago and are now extinct. This specimen dates from the Middle Ordovician, and was found in shales of the Lower Llanvirn Series, in the Abereiddian Stage, Hope Shale, at Whitsburn Dingle, Shropshire, UK. This is a complete individual. There is a large deeply furrowed glabella and no eyes. The pleurae have short stubby terminations which continue onto the pygidium. The rows of pits on each segment are characteristic. This specimen is centimetres long.
