HBOUT ten miles from the Buffalo river, which forms the eastern frontier ofNatal, rises conspicuous a tall, rocky, precipitous hill, called in the languageof the natives Insandhlwana, or The placeof the little hand, from a fancied resemblancein its form to an outstretched hand. Near thishill was fought, on the 22nd January, 1879,one of the most desperate actions ever en-gaged in under the British flag. Here, over-whelmed by numbers, an English force suffereda complete and most disastrous defeat, and here, bravely facing inevitable overthrow and death,English soldiers sternly answered to the call ofduty and fell with honour, grimly defiant tothe last. Of the actual details of the battle there areno complete records. The men who could havefurnished them lie under the shade of the hill, and the veldt grass grows green over their silentand glorious bed. But sufficient is known, asmuch from the subsequent testimony of theirgallant foes as from the words of the few sur-vivors of the fatal field
