Calvin Ger-rish, the father of Major Gerrish, was a farmerand mechanic, and was at one time promi-nently connected with the State militia. Hedied January 31, 1890. Major Gerrish attended the public schoolsat I-ranklin, Ienacook, and Concord, but at theage of fifteen entered the employ of the Con-curd Railroad, continuing thus engaged untilthe breaking out of the war, when he enlistedas a private in Company B of the Second NewHampshire Regiment, then commanded byGeneral Gilman Marston, and was musteredinto service in June, 1861. November 3,1861, he was rclicvetl from duty with his regi-ment, and placed on detached service at theheadquarters of General Joseph Hooker, Com-mander of the Second Division, Third Corps,where he remained until after the battle ofGettysburg, when he was ordered to PointLookout, Maryland.
