Gonorrhoea eye infection. Baby's eyes oozing pus due to infection by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. This congenital (present at birth) infection was passed from mother to baby during childbirth. The mother has the venereal (sexually-transmitted) disease gonorrhoea. One of the symptoms of the disease is a vaginal discharge of pus, similar to the pus seen here, which would transmit the infection to the baby while it was in the vagina (birth canal). This eye infection that results is named gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum. If not treated by antibiotic drugs and eye drops, blindness may result. Screening of pregnant women can prevent this disease. Photographed in Africa.
