Many of these names have already been passed upon and approved by the society. (1) First consideration has been given to names already in wide and general use. (2) Names descriptive of symptoms have been selected where practicable. (3) In general, the various diseases caused by a single organism on different hosts have been given the same common name. (4) Many diseases which are not sufficiently well known or important to re- ceive a descriptive name have been classed according to their major symptoms; for example, leaf-blight, root-rot, rust, and wilt. (5) It is assumed that the generic name of the causal organism may be pre- fixed to such common names whenever it is deemed desirable. DISTRIBUTION An endeavor has been made to give in a brief form the geographic range of each species as correctly as the available information will permit. Diseases reported from a few or widely scattered States are followed by lists of these States.
