SIMPLE SIMON. An early British colour illustration of the full version (4 extended verses) of the English children's nursery rhyme .----- 'Simple Simon's Misfortunes and his Wife Margery's Cruelty', first appeared about 1685. Some believe however that the ballad refers to a well known simpleton and London beggar of the very early 1700s, Simon Edy. He was also known as Old Simon and owned a number of dogs and collected discarded bric-a-brac that he had found in the streets & begged outside the churchyard of St Giles in the Fields
