Dunure Castle, Dunure, Ayrshire,Scotland, UK. Dunure was the ancient seat of the Kennedy family, traditionally lords of Carrick and eventually Earls of Castle is located on the west coast of Scotland, in South Ayrshire, about 5 miles south of Ayr and close to the village of Dunure. Today the castle stands in ruins on a rocky promontory on the Carrick coast, overlooking the small harbour of Dunure. In September 1570, Dunure Castle was the scene of a gruesome event during which Gilbert Kennedy roasted alive the Commendator of Crossraguel, in order to force him to transfer to him some of the lands belonging to the Abbey. The Commendator yielded after two turns of the spit and survived his injuries to a ripe old age. It dates back over 300 yrs and has been seen recently as a location in the Outlander televison series
