The young gallant in coat andknee-breeches of gray satin has a long scarlet cloak cast about him, and hasthrown his hat upon the ground as he bends fervently toward the object ofhis devotion, a pretty young girl in flowered silk dress and pink bodice, herhair dressed high and uncovered in the Spanish fashion. Leaning over thebalustrade behind the couple is a sly-faced old monk, listening with greatinterest to the young people beneath him, who are too occupied with theirown affairs to heed possible eavesdroppers.
