Edouard Belin (1876-1963), French inventor and telecommunications pioneer. In 1907 Belin invented the telephotograph machine, an early form of fax machine which allowed photographs to be transmitted by telephone or telegraphic networks. His 'multiplex telegraphoscopic receiver' used photoelectric cells to detect the amount of light falling on them. These produced sparks, which performated a paper strip. The strip was then passed through a cinama projector and the image was reproduced on a screen. Modern fax machines and photocopiers use similar principles. This image is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
