Burrow Mump, Somerset Levels, England. Looking north along the River Parrett to the mound topped by the medieval ruins of St Michael's church.
Looking N from Stanmoor Bridge along the River Parrett to the conical mound of Burrow Mump topped by the ruins of St Michael's church. A mostly natural hill rising above fields in the Somerset Levels drained for agriculture. The site of a Norman castle and English Civil War fortifications. Present ruin dates from the unfinished rebuilding of St Michael's Medieval chapel started in the 1720s. There is a WWII memorial to the Somerset dead on the Mump, and it is said to be on the St Michael ley line running from Cornwall to Suffolk including St Michael's Mount, Glastonbury Tor and Avebury. A block of peat cut by hand is called a mump. The site is also known as King Alfred's Fort.
