Soil drifting over US farm building. Hog house (pig sty) in South Dakota, USA, half-buried in a dune of soil and dust blown there by the wind. This scene dates from 1935, during the 'Dirty Thirties', or 'Dust Bowl', a period of severe dust storms in North America in the 1930s, caused by extreme drought and decades of intensive farming and land mismanagement. It caused major damage to American and Canadian prairie lands and forced families to migrate in search of jobs and food. This photograph was taken as part of a US government photography project that documented everyday American life between 1935 and 1944.
